It’s a Tough Topic to Address. But You’re Not Alone.
The reality of aging is no surprise, but somehow it always seems to sneak up on us anyway.
One moment you’re laughing because your dad got your name mixed up with the family dog’s. Or maybe you’re playing chauffeur because your parents don’t feel comfortable driving at night anymore.
Then the next moment, you’re asking yourself, “Is it time to talk to them about moving to a place where they’ll have more care than I can give? How will they react to the suggestion? Is my peace of mind worth potentially compromising their dignity or chipping away at their self-confidence?”
We’re here to help you through this.
Signs That It’s Time to Talk
Sometimes the changes in your loved one’s health and abilities are so gradual that they’re difficult to pick up on. Here are some things to look for that may indicate it’s time to have “the talk.”
- They’re having more trouble staying safe.
Maybe they’ve had a fall, gotten hurt doing something they used to handle easily, or started having trouble keeping track of medications. - They’re spending more time alone.
You may notice they’re not getting out as much, have stopped participating in activities they used to enjoy, or seem to be pulling away from friends and family. - They’re not keeping up with everyday self-care.
Changes in personal hygiene, appearance, and eating habits can be signs that everyday tasks are becoming more difficult. - Things that used to be easy are becoming harder.
Perhaps they’re struggling with cooking, shopping, managing the house,or just getting around.
And don’t forget to pay attention to your own experience as a caregiver.
If helping your parent is becoming overwhelming, you’re worried about them when you’re not there, or you’re simply finding that you can’t keep up with everything they need, that matters, too.
Tips for Starting the Conversation
Knowing you need to have the conversation is one thing. Actually bringing it up can feel like something else entirely. Here are a few ways to make it a little easier.
- Choose the right moment.
Look for a time when you’re both relaxed and have some privacy. This probably isn’t a conversation to squeeze in between errands or bring up in the middle of a stressful situation. - Start with “what you’ve noticed.”
Rather than telling your parent what they need to do, share what you’ve been seeing. “I’ve noticed you’ve had a harder time getting around lately. How are you feeling about it?” - Listen more than you talk.
Your parent may have concerns, fears, or ideas you haven’t considered. Give them space to share what they’re thinking, even if it’s not what you expected to hear. You might be surprised to find out they’re thinking along the same lines as you. - Keep the focus on what they want.
Talk about the things that matter most to them—staying independent, seeing friends, enjoying their favorite activities, or simply having fewer everyday responsibilities. It doesn’t have to just be about “how they need help.” - Take it one conversation at a time.
You don’t have to make a decision on the spot. Sometimes the first conversation is simply about opening the door to what might come next.
